Understanding VPPs

A Virtual Power Plant links thousands of home batteries to support the grid — and can pay you for the privilege.

What is a VPP?

A Virtual Power Plant (VPP) is a network of home batteries (and sometimes other devices) coordinated by software to act like a single, large power station. When the grid needs support — during a peak demand event or a supply shortfall — the VPP operator can discharge many batteries at once, helping stabilise the network.

What's in it for you?

Joining a VPP can earn you credits, a higher feed-in rate for exported battery energy, or direct payments in exchange for allowing occasional controlled discharges. It can improve the economics of owning a battery.

The trade-offs

  • You give up some control over when your battery discharges.
  • Programs vary — some lock you to a retailer; others are more flexible.
  • You'll usually still have reserve capacity for your own use and backup.

Is it right for you?

If you're comfortable with a degree of automated control in exchange for extra value, a VPP can be worthwhile. If you want full manual control and maximum backup reserve, you might prefer to operate independently.

The takeaway

VPPs are an evolving opportunity. We can explain current programs available with your chosen battery so you can decide with full information.
